Egypt’s ITIDA, Nokia Launch Africathon for Better Africa Using Technology Innovation

Egypt, Cairo– October, 2019: The Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (TIEC) of Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) hand to hand with Nokia and with the participation of Nokia Bell Labs announced the official launch of Africathon competition.

The competition targets change-makers from Egyptian youth between the ages of 18 and 29 to collaborate on developing smart and innovative solutions to address four key challenges in Africa namely Starting the EduTech evolution, Making Egypt greener, Connect the Unconnected, and making Africa safer.

Africathon will provide the selected candidates with three days fully funded boot camp to work on their ideas with the assistance of on-ground technical mentors and business advisors in addition to offering accommodation for non-Cairo residents.

Winners will be awarded 4 weeks Internship in Nokia Bell Labs in Paris and 3 months acceleration program by TIEC conducted in five different Egyptian governorates including Assiut, Alexandria, Cairo, Minya, and Mansoura.

The competition comes as part of the MoU signed between Nokia and the Egyptian ministry of ICT and ITIDA to spur youth innovation to come up with new innovative ideas and effective solutions for a better Africa through advanced collaboration and the use of the latest cutting-edge communication technologies.

Africathon is a step towards the vision of contributing and enhancing the quality of life in Africa using ICT. As Africa was recently named as the most innovation-fertile regions of the world. With its young population, large social disproportion and various developing countries and by supporting locals & innovators it becomes a particularly powerful & attractive innovation region.

One of the main mandates of ITIDA’s TIEC is supporting the growth of the innovation ecosystem by encouraging collaboration with multinationals to identify opportunities and recognize potential entrepreneurs for their achievements. This aims to motivate young people to innovate and to enable them to acquire the knowledge and tools needed to foster the development of innovative skills and original ideas using technology to provide solutions to society pressing challenges.
